This is historic! San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee made the announcement on Monday that the city will be the first in the nation to make city college free for all students. This is regardless of income or anything! It’s free for all students who make the cut!
The mayor Tweeted:
#SF is proud to be the first City in the nation to offer free community college tuition to our local residents pic.twitter.com/qqNhODXRw9

This has come after months of pressure on city hall to make higher education free for all and it worked!
Funding will ensure $5.4 million a year to City College to pay for the tuition of students who live in San Francisco. This is for students who have lived in the city for 1 year and 1 day minimum and they can attend full or part-time.
An increase in real estate transfer tax will pay for the move and it will benefit around 30,000 local students.
San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim said:
“Making City College free is going to provide greater opportunities for more San Franciscans to enter into the middle class and more San Franciscans to stay in the middle class if they currently are,”
This will start from next fall, a small step to closing the education gap between rich and poor!
