In some of America’s largest cities, black mayors are making the country proud by spearheading good governance and optimism for the people. These amazing men and women of grit are the epitome of good leadership, and are role models especially to the African – American community. They, indeed, are well deserving of high respect. Let’s examine some of these individuals.
Mayor Sylvester Turner is one such outstanding mayor. An attorney by profession, Turner is the mayor for Houston, Texas. He was elected on December 12, 2015. Coming from a modest background, he began his political journey as president of the student body in high school, and later was elected to The Texas House of Representatives in 1988.
Meet Muriel Bowser, the seventh mayor of the District of Columbia. She came into office on January 2nd 2015. Beginning 2004, the Democrat has been serving the people of the District of Columbia in various capacities. Among her many achievements, Bowser is credited with creating 5000 units of affordable housing while serving as the Chairwoman of the Committee on Economic Development.
Baltimore, Maryland boasts of having Catherine Pugh as its serving mayor. She has earnestly served the people of Baltimore as a public servant for 15 years. A public relations consultant by profession, she has had a very successful political career as well, and has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to diversity.
Finally, Sly James a Rockhurst College and University of Minnesota Law School graduate is a former attorney. He the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri and came into office on May 1, 2011. He is heralded as an exemplary leader and outstanding advocate.
These African-American Mayors are just a magnificent few that have been elected and are doing amazing jobs.
