Jerry Rice Wearing A Popeyes Chicken Helmet In A New Commercial: Did He Go Too Far?

Jerry Rice has managed to ruffle feathers in the black community again.

The first time he had our heads rolling was when he proclaimed “All Lives Matter” and criticized Colin Kaepernick for silently protesting the National Anthem. He later apologized for his criticism but I don’t know how he’ll come back from this one.

Whether you like fried chicken or not, you probably hate the stereotype about black people and chicken. This stereotype was derived from a racist 1915 silent film about the founding of the KKK, Birth of a Nation. One scene in the film depicted black elected official being loud and obnoxious in a legislative hall. One of the legislators was pretentiously eating fried chicken. This was looked down upon because he was eating with his hands which meant lacked manners hence watermelon stereotype. It was viewed as animalist and barbaric.

Well Jerry Rice and his new Popeye Chicken commercial has revolutionized how “we” eat chicken and pissed a lot of black people. Rice is wearing a football helmet with a piece of chicken attached to the front near the mouth, it’s indescribable see for yourself:

Not a good look Rice. Although some of us eat fried chicken and watermelon we wouldn’t be caught dead shuckin’ and jivin’ in a chicken commercial. Are we being too hard on Jerry?
