Colin Kaepernick has been making a strong statement and impact on the political rhetoric with his pre-match kneeling protests.
So, for many, it may be a suprise that he did not vote in the 2016 presidential elections!
Reporters had asked him if he had voted and if he was going to vote, the answer to both questions was a strong NO!
Talking to reporters on Wednesday, The Huffington Post reported that he said
“To me, it didn’t really matter who went in there,”
“The system still remains intact that oppresses people of color.”
Back in August when all this started he explained his protest saying:
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,”
“To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street, and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
So, is it a surprise that he did not vote? Well, it seems that initial figures coming in show overall voter turnout may have been very low, around 55%. AND turnout for blacks and other POCs was extremely low.
Basically the minority community took a stand that either outcome of the election would not benefit them. Something that Kaepernick seems to be echoing.
Before you run him over the coals too much, remember this man is standing by his belief, he is out there organising camps for kids, working with children with heart defects, working on the future, the youth that will make a difference. Maybe he feels the baby boomers need to go and be left to finish off their mess of a political state so the youth can rise and make a better America?
