The Ashburn Colored School in Virginia is a historic monument and local students have been working hard to restore it into an edcation museum. However their plans have stalled after it was attacked with racist graffiti, covered in swastikas and white power tags.
Around $20,000 had been raised for the project so far and lots of personal time from dedicated volunteers. This senseless act has of course left many heartbroken.
Originally opened in 1892, the school taught African Americans in Loudon County during the time of law binding racial segregation.
Students from the neighbouring Loudoun School for the Gifted, wanted to make sure the space carried on living as a museum. After this attack they have vowed to work even harder to realise the dream, although they will probably need about 5 times what they have raised already.
They wrote on their facebook page:
“While we are heartbroken about this senseless act, please know that our students, volunteers, and community will work even harder to complete the dream of renovating the Ashburn Colored School,”
So, we can help these hard working young men and women with small donations (and maybe more if you contact them personally).
