There are many sides of Rio battling for our attention right now! The main Rio is the one the Brazilian government and the Olympic committee has been showing us. However through the hard work of some journalists, bloggers and mainly the residents ourselves a lot of work has been put into making sure that the real Rio, the favelas, the dangerous streets and the underbelly of a somewhat think coat of paint is not forgotten.
Rio has a bit of a nasty past, a past where slavers brought African men, women and children to be worked to the bone, where these enslaved people settled and fought through life.
Even though the main olympic events have closed we can’t forget Rio, the Paralympics still have their run and the city itself will be struggling from the over-development that took place for this lavish event.
A group of street artists have been trying to make sure this past isn’t forgotten and have been making beautiful, yet educational murals around Rio.
The video below talks of this effort and shows some of the amazing art and the artists behind it.
