No, it’s not some uncover operation, the Boston police department really have spent $89,000 adding a fully fitted “good will” ice cream truck to it’s fleet of vehicles.
The truck comes adorned with feel-good balloons and Boston police graphics! The ice cream donated by Local dairy company HP Hood.
It was unveiled on Monday evening, at the city headquarters in the Roxbury neighborhood.
This isn’t something new exactly. Since 2010 they have distributed around 120,000 free ice cream cups, the operation was named “Operation Hoodsie Cup,”, yes, that really is it’s name!
William Evans, the commissioner seems as mystified as many of us and was quoted saying he would have called you crazy if you told him 30 years ago that they would be buying an ice cream truck…. Well, Mr Evans, many would call the Boston PD crazy now too!
He says that the goodwill and value it brings is undeniable but I am sure to many it just feels like an insult!
This is tax-payer money and while we all understand the idea and the fact that they are trying to harbor goodwill, why not actually put $90k into on-the-round research, community growth and understanding.
Everyone will take a free ice cream but what lessons does the PD learn?
Maybe I am a cynic!
What do you think of this?
