Avery Hannon has a high functioning autism. His condition affects his social communication and he couldn’t talk until three.

His parents have taken a lot of time to understand his condition and also, inspired by first-hand experience, the way their race affects the treatment of their child.

Michael Hannon, Avery’s father, has pursued a Ph.D. in race and autism to understand this and he is working to get the word out and try and make it clear that this is happening.

In the video below from Fusion, Michael lays out three areas where race is a problem when it comes to his son’s and many other’s autism.

1) Access to care, the difference between getting screened at 12 months or 18 months
2) Racial bia, children of color are perceived more threatening
3) Levels of trust, dealing with physician who are white, in denial and not sharing world view.
