A Cuban government representative, Gustavo Machin, told the yahoo news that the homecoming of Joanne Chesimard, better known as Assata Shakur, was non-negotiable.
Although Joanne, while still a member of the great Black Liberation Army was involved in an incident, nothing is going to change. During that incident, Werner Ferster, the New Jersey State Trooper was shot during a traffic halt. In 1977, Shakur was convicted but later she escaped prison. Since then, Assata fled to Cuba where she has enjoyed special protection despite maintaining her spot on the Most Wanted FBI list.
Joanne’s case only regained a national spotlight in December after the U.S. president, Barrack Obama spoke about a new era of improved relations with Cuba after a five-decade-long isolation. Following that announcement, several top conservatives including Senator Robert Menendez and Governor Chris Christie, both from New Jersey started calling for the transfer of Shakur from Cuba. In coordination with other officials, they have asked the return of Shakur to be one of the requirements for better diplomatic ties between U.S. and Cuba.
According to the Menendez’s letter addressed to the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry the Cuba’s rejection to return the 67-year-old Chesimard is “an unbearable insult to those want justice to be served.”
