Republican senators are trying to delay Obama’s nomination of a new Supreme Court Justice or block it in some way but as Obama has pointed out, this is basically dumb!

Although he didn’t directly say that his words were close. Responding to demands by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and many other Republicans that he doesn’t nominate a new Supreme Court Justice he said.

“The Constitution is pretty clear about what is supposed to happen now,”

“I’m amused when I hear people who claim to be strict interpreters of the Constitution suddenly reading into it a whole series of provisions that are not there,”

He was clear that it was his constitutional obligation to present a nomination and reminded the Republican controlled senate that it was also constitutional obligation to “do their job”, they need to vote to approve or reject his nominee!

Obama also talked about how “venom and rancor in Washington” has routinely meant the senate has blocked lower court nominations but highlighted that the Supreme court is too important for that.

Talking of how he will choose he said:

“We’re going to find somebody who is an outstanding legal mind, somebody who cares deeply about our democracy and cares about rule of law,”

“I’m going to present somebody who indisputably is qualified for the seat, and any fair-minded person, even somebody who disagrees with my politics, would say would serve with honor and integrity on the court,”

And he confirmed this does not mean his choice will be a moderate.

So, basically he is telling those Republicans to suck it up and do their duty! I couldn’t agree with him more on this matter!
