Discrimination at workplace is an offence but companies are doing it blatantly under the cover of temp agencies. Reports have surfaced about Automation Personnel Services Inc. an agency which provides workers for hire to companies in South, discriminating among workers applying for jobs.
The brunt of discrimination has been against African Americans or the black population.
Ex employee of Automation Personnel revealed in media reports that her manger told her not to send blacks to work for a certain employer and send latinos instead. It was also revealed that companies used code terms such as ‘country boys’ which meant ‘white men’, while asking for workers.
Blacks were not the only target of discrimination as employers preferred even white females without children for administrative staff duties. Many of the job applicants who were black were often told that the post they applied for had already been filled up even though that wasn’t the case.
These intermediary agencies are a major source of work opportunities for people looking for jobs.
However people are oblivious to the practices carried out by these agencies. Employers are using temp agencies to do things for them which they themselves can’t for fear of landing in trouble. These unfortunate applicants who are mostly blacks never know why they are not hired thus can’t even file complaints.
The legalities of hiring through temp agencies are such that it gets difficult to pin the onus on the hiring company.
Stephen Nordness the founder of Automation Personnel has refuted claims of discrimination against for hire workers. Truth nonetheless can be found out through an impartial investigation but considering the legal hurdles in such cases, it may be a long time coming.
