Overdue? New Orleans Proposes Removing Confederate Monuments

As a city with a confederate past New Orleans has long been having the discussion about it’s past and the monuments and references related to it that can still be seen today.

Obviously the links between the monuments and what they stand for is not ok in modern America so some kind of removal is for many a no-brainer.

New Orleans are mulling over removing all their monuments which would include the towering statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

ABC News reported:

“This has never happened before,” said Charles Kelly Barrow, commander-in-chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. “I’ve never heard of a city trying to sweep (away) all Confederate monuments.”

Geographers have identified at least 872 parks, natural features, schools, streets and other locations named for major Confederate leaders in 44 states, according to a mapping project. Barrow said more than a thousand statues and monuments and countless plaques also honor Confederate battles and heroes.

While history certainly should not be forgotten, honor to a racist past should be removed and personally I think this sweeping gesture could pave the way for other cities.
