It’s just broke that at around 8am this morning the head of the Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy was called into the office by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and fired.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel confirmed this in a press conference today, Tuesday 1st December.
56 year-old Garry McCarthy had faced hard critisim over the way he handled the shooting of 17-year-old black teenager Laquan McDonald by one of the city’s white police officers Jason Van Dyke. The release of the shooting footage sparked protests in the city and beyond.
McCarthy has held his position since 2011.
The protests on Chicago’s shopping streets over the weekend seriously affected shopping sales (down 50% in some cases) and it would be interesting to know how much the public disruption had in the mayor’s decision.
Do you think this top cop being fired is going to change anything?
More details over the dismissal will surely come in the following days.
