It still baffles my mind that LeBron James is still seen as a villian in the black community. Maybe we take our sports entirely too seriously because this young man is a great father, husband, business man and very active in the community.
Fresh off the heels of his announcement last month that he is working with the University of Akron to fund 1,100 kids with scholarships to attend the University through his I Promise program, LBJ is also helping out the parents of these fortunate children.
The Scholarship program will cost James in the neighborhood of $41 million dollars, but the impact on the children’s lives will be priceless. And to aid in the growth of these families, now James will help the parents attain their GEDs, if needed, as well.
[ADSENSE2]Cleveland.com is reporting James partnered up with Project Learn of Summit County this time to aid the parents to “receive financial and emotional support to obtain high school equivalency credentials and learn other life skills.”
The incentives for the adults are free Hewlett-Packard laptops in they are working and finishing their classes and a letter from LeBron James himself.
The program, as it stands right now, will be called “I Promise, Too.”
Michele Campbell, the Executive Director of the LeBron James Family Foundation said this in a press release:
We are so excited about the I PROMISE, Too program because a huge part of our foundation’s work (with children) centers around parent involvement. This is an opportunity to help our parents make strides in their own academic careers so they are better equipped to help our students keep their educational promises. We can’t reach our students without their parents’ support, so this program is monumental for our families and their futures.
Hats off to LeBron James and his effort to make Akron a better place for children and families to live.
