The men and women of the Ferguson and St. Louis police departments are clearly detached reality. How in the world do they think it is appropriate to wear “I Am Darren Wilson” wristbands less than two months after the officer shot and killed an unarmed, black teenager.
To rub the noses of the black community in this incident is clearly a sign they have no compassion for the black community, the deaths of the children or the parents of this young man. And with racial tensions charged, the community in unrest, it seems like the most inappropriate time to wear such signs of disrespect.
The United States Department of Justice had to step in and explain just how disrespectful and inappropriate for these officers to wear the wristbands and prohibit them for following this stupid course of action.
Captain Ron Johnson held a press conference on Wednesday:
“I think that that was not a statement of law enforcement, that wearing of that was an individual statement. I do expect that our officers, this unified command and all those that respond, respond in a professional manner and that when we wear this uniform, we understand that we’ve got a professional standard that we adhere to.”
The Deputy Chief of the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ, Christy Lopez, released a statement and letter on Friday saying the use of the wristbands “exacerbating an already tense atmosphere.”
