The state of Missouri is making national news again for the wrong reasons. This time, a small city moves forward by electing the first African American mayor and 80% of the police force quits in protest.
Tyrus Byrd is the new Mayor of Parma, Missouri and she is very excited to take on the task of running the small town. There are only 740 people in the town, but a lot to be done.
The Mayor was sworn in last Tuesday for her new position. Previously, she served as city clerk.
After 37 years as Mayor, Randall Ramsey lost to the new African American female Mayor of Parma. He wasn’t pleased at the outcome, but did inform the public that five of the six police officers on duty submitted their resignation. Apparently, they cited “safety concerns” as the reason for their quitting the job.
In addition, Parma’s city attorney, clerk and water treatment supervisor quit as well.

There were nothing but supporters around Byrd when she was sworn in as Mayor and the people are trying to rally behind her to move things forward. They didn’t like the police force quitting, but say they aren’t worried about safety.
“I think it’s pretty dirty they all quit without giving her a chance,” resident Martha Miller told KFVS. “But I don’t think they hurt the town any by quitting, because who needs six police for 740 people.”
Byrd isn’t making a big deal of this and said she is focused on getting things in order for the city.
SOUND OFF: Are you surprised the police force and city officials for quitting their jobs because a black woman was elected Mayor?
