5 Free Math & Computer Science Programs for Black Children

There is no doubt the STEM movement of science, technology, engineering and mathmatics are growing and thriving in the 21st century. The trend seems to be only gaining momentum as opposed to regressing.

Therefore, it is important that parents of young black children take advantage of opportunities to build in these important areas. We would like to help you with a small piece of this effort by sharing 5 wonderful resources for learning math, computer programming and more.

Best of all, these are all free resources. Some are 100% online based, others require you to be in specific areas, but all are worth the time and effort to review.

  1. girl smilingBlack Girls Code – Black Girls CODE is devoted to showing the world that black girls can code, and do so much more. By reaching out to the community through workshops and after school programs, Black Girls CODE introduces computer coding lessons to young girls from underrepresented communities in programming languages such as Scratch or Ruby on Rails.
  2. Yes We Code – Many have been searching for ways to uplift today’s urban youth and help them achieve a more promising future. We believe that one solution lies in connecting tech and social justice leaders to spearhead revolutionary tech programs whose benefits extend to the most disadvantaged of society.
  3. Khan Academy – Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more.
  4. Coursera – We provide universal access to the world’s best education. Coursera is an education platform that partners with top universities and organizations worldwide, to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free.
  5. EdX – At edX, we believe in the highest quality education, both online and in the classroom. EdX was created for students and institutions that seek to transform themselves through cutting-edge technologies, innovative pedagogy, and rigorous courses.
