It was a tense moment as Michelle Carter went for her third and last throw in the Olympics final shot putting. But she rose up high and smashed the challenge, not only grabbing gold but breaking a dry spell for American women in Olympic shot putting.

Carter broke the American record on her final throw, a surprise win as New Zealand’s Valerie Adams (2 time gold winner) looked poised to beat everyone!

Adams’ best throw was 20.42m (67 feet). She was going to win! Then Carter threw 20.63m (67-8.25) and history was made!

She is the first American woman to take a shot put podium place since 1960!

Although a certified professional makeup artist, known as “Shot Diva,” she is also now the first U.S. Olympic women’s shot put gold medalist.

Earlene Brown last claimed a medal with a bronze in 1960!

Carter clearly has it in the family, her dad Michael won silver in 1984’s olympics and won three superbowl rings playing for the San Fran 49ers.

Respect to this hard working woman!
