Barely a teen, this bright 13-year-old girl has a brilliant mind, and when it comes to playing chess she is a true winner. This smart seventh grader from Englewood has made history when she took home the-bronze medal in the IESA-state chess tournament-in Peoria. Tamya Fultz is the only African-American, and the only girl to take home a medal that day!
Her mom heavily encouraged her to join the tournament even though she has only been playing for a year. The principal of her school sees her as a role model for other young teens and, she surely is when it comes to being an example of sportsmanship and behavior. “She is breaking down barriers” her principal is quoted to have said of the amazing 13-year-old.
Following her victory, they soon realized Tamya made history! “This is the first time ever in the history of our school and our community that a girl, a seventh-grader, has won first place in a CPS chess tournament,” her chess coach Joseph Ocol said. “She bested even the eighth-graders who were pitted against her in this tournament.”
When asked her opinion, Tamya’s response was “Win or lose. You still work hard, and don’t get angry.” Pretty wise words from someone so young!
