The Wiz Live And Its All-Black Cast Draws 11.5 Million Viewers!!

The Wiz Live has been building for a while adding more and more star power. Finally the Live event hit the screens and it absolutely killed it!

The show led by Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and David Alan Grie brought back to the screen the Wizard of Oz reimagining with a lot of flair. NBC has had former hits with this live show format and they pulled out all the stops to make this worth the watch.

Nielson said that The Wiz Live averaged a 3.4 rating/11 share in adults 18-49 and about 11.5 million viewers overall from 8 to 10:45 p.m. The only fall show that may beat this is The Voice. Its season premiere averaged a 3.5/11 in 18-49 and 12.37 million.

Of course The Wiz was popular with African American markets but I think it’s clear this was a hit across the board doing better than last years Peter Pan live. It didn’t quite make the heights of The Sound of Music which was the year before and draw in over 18 million.

There was some controversy around the all-black cast but I feel the story location (Harlem) and need to promote black performers in major productions is more than justified.

Did you watch the Wiz Live? What did you think of the show compared to the original movie?
