Former Vanderbilt football player Cory Batey was handed a 15 year sentence on Friday for a college campus rape of an unconscious female student. She said her life was shattered after the rape and he was handed the sentence which could have been between 15-25 years for aggravated rape. Prosecutors had asked for the maximum sentence to send a message about campus rapes.

The victim was a neuroscience and economics major when she was assaulted in a dorm on the Nashville campus. The incident happened in June 2013 and four former football players were charged.

Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner just got out from his 6 months sentence after 3 months for good behaviour. He walked free despite widespread anger towards the light sentencing.

Both of the women who were victims of these vile men deserve better than this. Both women deserved decency and respect. In one case, at least one victim knows her attacker will be behind bars for some time (although we can argue it’s not enough), but in the case of Turner’s victim she has to see his privileged face on the media as he walks free, effectively for the same crime.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Of course every case is different, of course the judge, the arguments, they are all very different. However it’s glaring that one guy, who got 15 years, is black…. And the other is white! Arguments about his character should have been invalid and it’s impossible to not think that color, class and social-power had something to do with this.

ALL RAPE SHOULD BE PUNISHED IN A WAY TO SEND A MESSAGE. NO WOMAN DESERVES IT, EVER, PERIOD!
