The DC teen’s Google doodle honoring African-American heritage has gone viral on the internet today. Akilah Johnson, a 10th-grade student from Washington, D.C. had the internet going nuts Monday. Akilah’s artwork had a breakthrough in Google’s top student-doodler contest and won. Akilah was among one hundred thousand students who submitted their artwork for the doodle 4 Google contest. Nevertheless, Akilah Johnson’s artwork has been considered excellent and was displayed on Google’s homepage.

The captivating aspect of the artwork reveals Akilah’s African-American culture and experience. The artwork is boldly titled, “My Afrocentric Life” and designed using sharpie markers, black crayons, and color pencils. Akilah was the first African-American to win the contest. The Black Lives Matter movement is among current themes that Akilah’s story points at. It also reveals a braid that anchors on Akilah’s various childhood experiences. The victory was well deserved.
