Beauty queens saying things like they want world peace is not exactly new news, however this Sudanese beauty queen isn’t just blurting out words to win a title. She means business.
Natalina Yaqoub uses her title to highlight the racist rhetoric used against the Nuba people. The Nuba people are being bombed by the government.
She is appealing to the government for an end to the bombing, in the area where her family still lives.
The Sudanese government say they are striking against rebels seeking refuge in the mountainous villages. However many human rights groups have deemed the bombing indiscriminate.
There have been over 4,000 bombs dropped and mass civilian death.
Yaqoub said:
“I’ve told our politicians and ministers that we want peace,… Our mothers and sisters are being killed and raped. Yes, we are safe in Khartoum but we suffer so long as our families back home suffer.”
She was initially crowned the Nuba beauty queen in 2014 at the Nuba Cultural Heritage festival. Last year, the pageant panel decided to extend her reign as she had an important message to keep spreading.
She is aiming to undermine President Omar al-Bashir’s rhetoric and end the violence of ethnic and cultural supremacy.
