Labels we are given can make or break us in life. Some people let labels and stereotypes define who they are and they choose to live within the parameters someone else deemed fit for them. While others fight against the odds and become bigger and greater than the limitations put on them.
Melonie Wright defied the odds. Instead of letting others put her in a box she was determined to be better than the “special needs” label that was given to her in school. At some point as a young student Wright was labeled as a “special needs” student but later she went on to excel and in high school and in college. Once she accepted to law school she faced some unforeseen challenges. During law school she got pregnant, was in an abusive relationship and at one point was homeless and struggled to feed herself and her child.
She continued to fight for herself and her daughter because she knew there would be brighter days. She hopes her story will inspire others to pursue their dreams and never give up on themselves. She wrote, “If my life means anything, it means that God is alive and He is walking with my imperfect, broken, messed up past self. He took my brokenness and exchanged it for His peace. He told me to do this, and He never failed me or my daughter.”
