Every year the Charlotte Hornets hold a day of community services called Swarm To Serve. Just ahead of this years event majority shareholder Michael Jordan made a big announcement.
He announced that he, the Hornets, along with key donors such as Lowes and Bank of America and employees and staff from these organisations has invested $500,000 into the city, into literacy programs.
This will help stock the shelves of 18 libraries in various centers across the city in low-income areas. Other local charities will also receive some of the cash.
Nearly 400 volunteers will be involved in building the libraries and talking to these Jordan said
“When I took over majority control of the team, one of the biggest impacts I wanted … was to reconnect back to the community,” and regarding the connection “I felt was lost a little bit with the previous ownership, and I felt it was very important.”
In 2008 the former owner, BET founder Robert Johnson, laid off the team’s community relations department.
On the surface this obviously seems amazing although it’s unclear how much personal money (if any) Jordan put it.
Many are skeptical of Jordan and what he does, we would like to know what you think?
