Wole Soyinka was the first African to win the Nobel Prize for literature and unlike other respectable black folks who said they would leave the country if Trump won, he is sticking to his promise.
The Nobel Laureate announced on Thursday that he has “disengaged” from the U.S. and thrown away his green card.
In 1986 he won the Nobel Prize for literature. The Nigerian born writer has lived in USA for around 20 years, he has taught at Harvard, Cornell and Yale!
He had said pre-electon that he would start cutting his Green Card as soon as Trump’s win was announced. So, on Thursday, talking to French news agency AFP he said:
“I have already done it. I have disengaged. I have done what I said I would do,”
“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump. … I threw away the card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been,”
About others going to USA he said:
“It’s useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card … but I have had enough of it,”
You can’t fault a man who is true to his word!
