POWER MOVE: Did You Know Serena & Venus Williams Bought A Stake In The Miami Dolphins?

This was new and great news to me. I had no idea the Williams sisters were making history in professional sports by becoming the first African American females to have ownership in a NFL franchise.

In August of 2009, the Serena and Venus officially became limited ownership partners in the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, according to People magazine, putting entrepreneurship and ownership on the front burner of conversations in the black community.

“I am so excited to be part of such a renowned organization,” says Serena. “Having spent so much of my childhood in the area, being involved with a staple of Miami culture is a huge honor. We look forward to many championships and much success together with the Miami Dolphins.”

Agrees Venus, “I am honored to be a partner in the Miami Dolphins franchise and thankful to owner Stephen Ross for allowing Serena and I to be part of Miami Dolphins history.”

Personally, I think this is a wonderful POWER MOVE by the sisters, but wonder if the lesson of ownership and entrepreneurship will reach the wider black community. It seems we have slipped into a confortable state of consumerism and think this is the place to be. With all my being I want to see our people wake from our slumber to begin building, creating and supporting great businesses that will economically and employment wise serve our community.

SOUND OFF: Were you aware of this and what do you think of these two young ladies off the tennis court and in the business world?
