27 year old Donnell Thompson was sleeping in a stranger’s yard. He had the mental awareness of a much younger man but was much loved and known to be gentle, he went by the nickname Little Bo Peep.
As police called in a SWAT team to deal with a car jacker who had returned fire on a sherif they swept the LA neigborhood and found the sleeping man.
The car jacker was hiding inside a nearby house. However, the Washington Post reported:
When Thompson didn’t respond to commands, the deputies detonated flash-bangs. When he still didn’t move, they hit him with foam bullets.
And when he allegedly ran toward them, a deputy atop the armored vehicle opened fire with an assault rifle, striking Thompson twice in the torso.
Thompson died. At almost the same instant, the real carjacker was arrested.
Thompson died, unarmed, completely uninvolved, yet police tried to keep up the facade for weeks that he was an accomplish.
Now, they have finally admitted a mistake. The post continued to say:
“No question this is a terribly devastating event,” Capt. Steve Katz said during a news conference. He said there was “no physical evidence” connecting Thompson to the carjacking or shootout and promised a “thorough” and “complete” investigation into the shooting, according to the Associated Press.
Now his family are calling for charges againts the officer who killed Thompson and it’s completely understandable why.
A tense situation, yes, but did Thompson really scare them that much? An entire team against an unarmed sleeping man?
Pressure needs to be kept up so these questions can be answered.
RIP Little Bo Peep, we hope you are safe now.
