This Sunday’s episode of Melissa Harris-Perry featured a roundtable discussion about the politics of black hair.
“For me, black womens’ hair—the politics of it seem obvious,” said host Melissa Harris-Perry. “But I realize it may not be obvious to everyone, particularly, maybe, to our viewers who haven’t encountered these questions before.”
What followed was a discussion of those questions and the history of them. “I think Tracie Thoms, a fellow actress, she said it best,” said Nicole Ari Parker, an actress currently starring in a Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire. “Very simply: It’s amazing that it’s considered revolutionary to wear my hair the way it grows out of my head.”
