37-year-old Matthew Apperson faces sentencing later this month after being convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm after he fired shots at George Zimmerman in a 2015 road rage incident. He faces a potential 20 years behind bars. He was also convicted by the jury of shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault with a firearm.

Apperson maintained self defence throughout the trial. He says that in the incident Zimmerman threatened to kill him and flashed a gun, she he shot. The bullet missed Zimmerman’s head and lodged itself in the metal frame of the car.

The incident was apparently caught on the CCTV of a nearby post office and Assistant State Attorney Stewart Stone told jurors that Apperson was the instigator.

The Orlando Sentinal reported;

Stone said Apperson’s behavior fails to meet the standard of self defense because he did not act in a reasonable, prudent or cautious manner prior to firing. Zimmerman testified that he never brandished a gun, and Apperson said he shouted expletives at Zimmerman.

“George Zimmerman is no boy scout — I get that, and you get that,” Stone said. “But no matter how you feel about George Zimmerman, he he can still be a victim of a crime, and he was in this case.”

And Apperson’s defence attorney Michael LaFay said:

“in his closing argument, attacked Zimmerman’s credibility as a major witness in the case. He repeatedly referenced the Trayvon case, questioning Zimmerman about his first encounter with the 17-year-old. LaFay also called Zimmerman’s ex-girlfriend to testify about a fight between her and an armed Zimmerman, which prompted her to call 911.

“He is a belligerent, obnoxious liar, and I don’t say that lightly,” LaFay told jurors. “[Zimmerman] is a bully with a lot of guns and a lot of ammunition.”

The two men previously clashed in 2014 when it was reported that Apperson confronted Zimmerman and said he should not have killed Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman reportedly followed Apperson and threatened him.
