If you are anything like me, this bit of news slipped by you.

Not because you were sleeping, but because it wasn’t widely publicized.

I pride myself on staying informed, but was a bit shocked to find out this happened and I didn’t know anything about it.

The sad part of this is this isn’t recent news. Thomas Hagan is the only person who admitted to being involved in the 1965 assassination of Malcolm X. He is black and he is free as of April, 2010.

malcolm xAccording to CNN: Hagan, 69, walked out of the minimum-security Lincoln Correctional Facility at 11 a.m. The facility is located at the intersection of West 110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.

Hagan had been in a full-time work-release program since March 1992 that allowed him to live at home with his family in Brooklyn five days a week while reporting to the prison just two days.

Hagan was no ordinary prisoner. He is the only man to have confessed in the killing of Malcolm X, who was gunned down while giving a speech in New York’s Audubon Ballroom in 1965.

“I have deep regrets about my participation in that,” he told the parole board on March 3, according to a transcript. “I don’t think it should ever have happened.”

Hagan had been sentenced to 20 years to life imprisonment after being found guilty at trial with two others in 1966. The other two men were released in the 1980s and have long denied involvement in the killing.

Needless to say, Malcolm X meant a lot to many people, but especially those involved in the day to day struggle of the black community to gain control over their own lives. Unfortunately, he was gunned down in front of his family, wife and four children, at the Audubon Ballroom where he was delivering a speech. The date was February 21st, 1965.

Over 45 years later, the only admitted killer of Malcolm X walks free from prison.

How do you feel about him being let go after killing such an iconic figure to the black community? And what do you think about his release slipping by most people? (Admittedly, maybe this only slipped by me, but i’m sure many of you were not aware of this either.)

Mr. Dick Gregory insist that according to the medical examiner’s report the the projection of the fatal shots came from an elevated position and not an upward projected path as would have been the case had those Brothers positions from the floor directly in front of Malcolm??
