Lupita Nyong’o Told Vogue to Put some “Respeck” on Her Ancestry

Of course Lupita Nyong’o has the internet going nuts. Monday night at the Met Gala Lupita looked absolutely amazing with her long green shimmering gown and her sculpted hair. She was a show stopper to say the least. People cannot stop talking about her gorgeous ensemble but that hair! We will probably be talking about her hair for quite some time.

While on the red carpet Lupita stopped to talk to Vogue’s Andre Talley, during which Talley said she was definitely channeling Nina Simone with her hairdo. But after her interview with Talley, a writer from Vogue compared her hair to Audrey Hepburn, a British actress. Lupita with her style and grace set the record straight by posting a short video on Instagram to show who truly inspired her hairdo and let’s just say the video did NOT include Hepburn. So Lupita gracefully said “Put some ‘respeck’ on it!”

Far too often other ethnicities easily disregard our culture and try to stake claim to it. From our body types, our hair, our vernacular, and our unduplicatable way of being. From big lips becoming popular because of Angelina Jolie, big butts because of J. Lo, and now this. Shaming us for having these features while praising others. Our culture is constantly being ripped away from us or deemed undesirable until a non-black person deems its acceptance. Thankfully technology makes it a lot hard to take credit away from the creator, but can you imagine how much was taken from us before now? What traditions were stolen? What intellectual properties were stolen? I’m just happy Lupita set the record straight!
