Eric Garner died in 2014 in front of a convenience store in Staten Island after being approached by two police officers who accuse him of selling loose cigarettes. During the confrontation one of the officers, Daniel Pantaleo, put Garner in a chokehold which ultimately led to his death. Eric Garner’s last words were caught on video, “I can’t breathe” which became a staple for justice for his death.

Eric Garner’s family has been waiting for two years for justice and now they may finally get it. After stalling progress in the Eric Garner investigation the Justice Department has decided to replace the New York team of agents and lawyers that were put in charge of investigating Garner’s death. The team is being replaced with authorities outside of New York. The Federal prosecutor from Brooklyn will also be replaced but there is no word on who the new prosecutor will be.

Pantaleo is standing strong with defense, his lawyer stated that he did nothing wrong and followed his training. Even though we quickly found out that it is and was at the time of Garner’s death unlawful for cops to use a chokehold.

The Justice Department plans to move swiftly to charge Pantaleo for civil rights violation but it could be months before he is charge and indicted.
