Taye Diggs received a lot backlash from fans over comments he made about his son being referred to as biracial instead of black. I completely understand what he’s saying but in the black community we tend to be overly sensitive.
His son is biracial and all Taye is saying is he’s both black and white. But Taye we (the black community) did not make up the one drop rule, we just have to live by it. Yes he is biracial but you are doing your son a disservice if you do not prepare him to be identified and treated as a black man. Any and every non-black person he encounters will treat him as such.
So you might as well prepare him. No one is saying neglect the fact that his mother is white but he needs to know that he will be treated like a black man. I may lose some people with that statement but most black men know exactly what I’m talking about. Yes we want to pretend like we live in a world where everyone is treated equally but that’s bull and we all know it.
If he goes on a job interview they will see a black man, if he auditions for a movie they will see a black man, if he tries to catch a cab they will see a black man, if he is pulled over by the police they will see a black man.
So please don’t get it twisted, yes he is biracial, no he should never deny his mom but he is and forever will be seen as a black man.
