Simon Petrus is a grade 12 learner from Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School in Ohangwena Region, Nambia. His new invention is making waves!

It’s a cell phone that can make (I am not sure if it can receive) calls without the need for a SIM-card, a cell phone plan and doesn’t use any airtime at all!

So what does it use?

It uses radio waves, which of course are free to use.

The device was put together with parts of an old television and a telephone. It also has a light bulb, a fan and can be used to watch one tv channel! So not quite a pocket device but can be carried around (and of course is the first version).

Last year Petrus already won a gold medal at the national NamPower schools’ competition for his seed drier and cooler.

This latest project took about two years work and a substantial investment of N$2 000 from his parents, who are unemployed but clearly trying their best for him.

So, the device has an expired SIM card and apparently if there are radio waves he can make calls to anywhere! The TV station available is NBC1, which is a nice touch!

This project recently one first place at the regional level and is heading for the national competition.

It would be amazing if he can develop this further!
