It could be because of mounting pressure from advocates of racial justice and diversity or good conscious, but the technology giant known as Google has stepped up to the plate to help do their part.
The search king decided to open their profitable coffers and to donate a few million dollars toward the aim of driving racial justice for all in the United States of America, supposedly a God given right, but African Americans have been catching hell since the country began.
According to the USA Today, the corporation dedicated $2.35 million in grants to community organizations combatting racial injustice in the United States.
The announcement came last month during the screening of 3 ½ Minutes, 10 Bullets at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. This film was about the horrible shooting death and murder of Jordan Davis. He was the 17 year old teen shot and killed by Michael Dunn in 2012 in Jacksonville, FL for playing his “music too loud”….but the real reason is because he was black and Dunn was white.
The grant program is a part of a larger initiative of the company to not only curve racial injustice, but also higher more and more black and brown people, diversity the tech industry.
The technology giant’s philanthropic arm chose organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area taking on systemic racism in America’s criminal justice, prison and educational systems, says Justin Steele, who leads Google.org’s Bay Area giving efforts.
Steele says the grants are just the first for Google.org as it seeks to address the Bay Area’s growing economic gap that has only widened during the technology boom.
“We hope to build on this work and contribute to this movement for racial justice,” Steele said in an interview.
