A new grocery store owned by former NFL superstar, Tyrone Legette, has been officially opened in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The grocery store is located in the Brookwood Village shopping center, in the exact spot where Winn Dixie stood before it closed fifteen years ago.

The black-owned grocery’s grand opening was graced by several prominent community leaders including city officials last Tuesday evening. Speaking during the ceremony was Chauna Banks the Metro Councilwoman who lauded the former New Orleans Saints cornerback for the bold step he took and challenged other investors to emulate him. The City Mayor also spoke at the Grand Opening about investors disinterest in investing in North Barton Rouge and said he’s hopeful that the grocery store launch will draw them back.

It is important to mention that several grocery stores have come and gone in North Baton Rouge. Since it has been 15 years since this community has had a convenient place to purchase food, therefore it is important for the community to make sure this grocery store will be the one that sticks around. And let’s not forget about the fact that Legette has created jobs in this community. This is a big step in the right direction and can hopefully draw other businesses to the area to help bring North Baton Rouge back to life.

Needless to say, Save-A-Lot has exciting times ahead and it undoubtedly provides a platform to the locals as well as those who truly support black economic development to show by example.
