Fifth Third Bank has to Pay $18 Million Settlement for Discriminatory Lending Practices

The banks are at it again, it first started in the housing sector and has now moved to automobile lending. An Ohio-based Fifth third bank has agreed to pay an $18 million settlement for discriminatory lending. But the land of the free and home of the brave is not racist and all people are created equally.

After a joint investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was completed, it was found that they had actually been charging African American and Latino customers more interest on their auto loans. It was also found that credit history did not play a role in the decision of the car dealers to charge more interest, it was solely based on the color of the borrowers’ skin because whites with the same or similar credit scores still received lower interest rates.

They are also being asked to change their lending practices because Fifth Third Bank let the dealers raise the interest rate using their own discretion but they also profited off the interest which is clearly a conflict of interest. Customers of color paid up to 2.5 percent more in interest.

Fifth Third Bank has 15 partners in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, Missouri and North Carolina. Therefore minorities from these stares who received auto loans from Fifth Third between January 2010 and September 2015 should be on high alert. Also people of color should stop banking with this entity. There are several black banks and credit unions you can bank with. Go where you’re celebrated and not tolerate (and taken advantage of).
