Continuing Our Right To Vote as African Americans

I was convicted in my soul to write this article.

Let’s first understand where it was began.

African Americans have a history in both major political parties of the United States. After the Civil War almost all Blacks considered them-selves Republicans. It was the Republican Party that was started by abolitionists and of course the party of President Abraham Lincoln.

Mean-while Southern Democrats strongly opposed any rights to Blacks at the time and for almost a century there-after.  African Americans were not even allowed to officially attend the Democratic convention until 1924.

It wasn’t until 1965 when the act was established so that all African Americans had the permission to vote freely without any restrictions.

Fast forward to 2008-2012.

There was a record of African Americans voting due to a black running for the highest office in the free world.

I know without a doubt our ancestors are humbled that we decided to come together as a race and make a difference in a white driven society. The only issue I have is that we tend to lose motivation when we don’t see the change we are looking for.

voting rights

Let’s be real about this.

  • We have the power to change and move mountains, yet we continue to be distracted of things of not concerning the change.
  • We have come a long way, yet we have a long way to go to be diverse in our way of thinking.
  • We are quick to know the newest song or know what play this football player is making, but don’t know who we are voting into office to make the impact in the urban communities.

People use to wake miles upon miles to go to the nearest voting booth, yet we cannot drive a block and stand in line for it.

I simply pray that we get our selves in order to better this and make it known.

Keep up to date with everything going on in the Urban Intellectuals Universe.
