Africa is finally starting to dig itself out of the titanic mess left behind after Colonialism and bond together as a continent to hold each other up as they rise to their rightful position in this world. It is truly exciting to see the Union working together on initiatives that will eventually lead to a united Africa with complete free movement of peoples!
Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union, just released a statement:
“I am pleased to stress that, in February 2019, in Addis Ababa, at the 32nd Summit of our Union, the Commission will present, for adoption, guidelines on the design, production and issuance of the African passport, the materialization of which will take us one step closer to the long-held dream of complete free movement across the continent.”
The move has a goal to unify all Africans and empower countries with weak passports. Although the passport was available for African heads-of-state since 2016 the roll out is now going to apply to ordinary citizens.
Of course, there are still many obstacles to climb, many countries have rivalry and distrust within the continent but the Union is pushing to rise above the cultural barriers and create pride and unity.
Other initiatives such as a Cairo to Capetown highway and many cross-country projects will hopefully also be successful and help towards these goals.
What are your thoughts on this?
