March is Women’s History Month and Ebony Magazine is celebrating this wonderful month in a unique way. Most of us have probably never paid attention to the fact that a certain kind of woman is usually overlooked during this month of appreciation and that is the “thick” woman.
Ebony is celebrating curves this month! Danielle Brooks, Gabi Fresh, Chrisette Michelle, and Jazmine Sullivan graced the cover of Ebony this month representing “The Body Brigade.” They address body image and talk about being proud of who they are and what they represent.
This is an important topic. Last year, in Preschool, a note was sent home with my daughter telling me she was overweight. My daughter was 4 at the time and she wore a 4/5 which is typical for a child her age. My daughter is very active, plays sports and is a surprisingly healthy eater.
Sometimes our standards of beauty tend to be skewed by mainstream media. Victoria Secret models usually range between a size 0 and 4. Grown woman that are 5’9 and taller should not be wearing a zero. That can’t be healthy. Therefore Ebony taking the time to celebrate these woman is a job well done. Something I have been noticing is more and more plus size women have been given modeling, acting, and entertaining opportunities. Showing the world that beauty comes in all different shapes and sizes. Don’t forget, Tyra Banks was once considered a plus size model.
