Potato chips are hardly new but they were invented buy a black man, named Crumb believe it or not (learn more about Crumb and his potato chips here)! But the market is dominated by your standard old white men corporations.

And in Rwanda potato chips had never been made there before, so one group of guys decided to make use of the local potato agriculture and start making potato chips locally.

Co-founder Pascal Murasira decided to do his homework on the idea.

Most snacks in Rwanda are imported from other African countries so he wanted to make something local and to a high quality.

He did a lot of research on making the chips and the best method and managed to raise capital of around 0,000 USD, some funding came locally and some from the Dutch government.

He has also now partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to expand production and raised more from investors in the Netherlands.

He started producing the chips as high quality kettle chips with no artificial additives, with the added knowledge that they were local people were intrigued. So intrigued that they went from strength to strength and are now shifting around 12,000 bags a month, all this in less than 3 years! The company started in 2014.

Murasira said that for the future:

“We want to position ourselves as the most environment-friendly and most innovative potato crisps producer in the region.”

“We need to position our product as a premium brand that can compete with foreign brands such as Lay’s.”
