When it comes to the big screen we rarely have the opportunity to watch movies from black filmmakers. This is slowly changing with Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Nate Parker’s Birth of Nation. Film student Terry Haynes told CBS Chicago news, “we don’t show a lot of independent black films, at least (not) from our perspective.”
To fill this gap ebony.com is teaming up with kweliTV to give filmmakers like Terry an opportunity to showcase their talent. Together ebony.com and kweliTV created to the “Color TV” contest, where they received tons of creative and uplifting entries from filmmakers of color.
The first winner of the “Color TV” competition was a short science fiction film, Rigamo. The creator of Rigamo is Brooklyn filmmaker Che Grayson. Ebony.com described the film as “a poignant exploration of the intersection of Black Lives Matter, mortality, family and mourning with a Twilight Zone twist. The plot centers around Kera, a five-year-old girl who is forced to watch a close relative die from a terrible disease, until she discovers that she has a magic power that can turn things around.”
Ebony.com gave us suspenseful look into the film, imagine bringing a loved one back to life or Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, or Tamir Rice. This definitely sounds intriguing, we will hopefully have an opportunity to see Rigamo soon! Grayson’s film will be available on kweliTV where they offer a free 30-day trial. Ebony and kweliTV have also started accepting entries for the second round of the “Color TV” competition.
