Seven young black male students from Warren Easton Charter High School located in New Orleans, Louisiana graduated twice in two days. After graduating from high school and receiving their diplomas the very next day they graduated from Delgado Community College and received certificates in technical studies. They are certified to do residential wiring which allows them to work on the wiring in houses.
The certification program started with twenty students during their junior year but only seven completed the program. It was not easy to juggle their usual schedule in high school then later go to Delgado College to class but they worked together to complete the program. These young men are a great of example of what team work looks like. They formed a study group and would meet at the library to ensure they reached their goals.
They all want to pursue different careers in life but realized that the certification would give them “something to fall back on”, it is vital to set up a plan B just in case plan A falls through. So these young men are already off to a great start. Especially during a time when you typically only see young black males portrayed in negative light. This experience has inspired some of the young men to return to Delgado in the fall for additional certifications, while others will pursue four year institutions. The residential wiring certification has a few of them interested in electrical engineering. Thank you Super Seven for giving yourself options in life but for also being an inspiration to other young boys and girls!
