A sad but inspiring story emerged recent about 19-year-old Fred Barley. Fred showed grit and determination to attend and finish college when he was found camping in bushes near campus with just a box of cereal and a few gallons of water.
The teen had ridden 50 miles, 6 hours, to college to register on a 20″ child bike belonging to his kid brother, homeless and broke he was fighting to make sure he attended college and made his own future.
When this determination is recognised it’s heartwarming to see that people help out and Fred’s hard work has been rewarded.
First off, campus police went to his tent. He thought he was being arrested but actually they came to pay for him to stay in a motel for two nights. Then a GoFundMe campaign was set up for the boy.
It raised $184,266 of it’s $150k goal in super quick time (just five days!) with over 5,700 donors, ensuring that this amazing young man no longer needs to worry about his education.
I’m sure there are many as determined as Fred and we should find and help every single one of them. We should make sure that our young amazing men and women are helped when they need and don’t let them fall short of the success they deserve.
