Many prominant figures are calling for December 6th to be celebrated as Abolition Day. It is arguably one of the most significant days in African-American history and many believe this needs to be officially marked!!
Judge James Wynn, a member of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that December 6, 1865 “is arguably the most significant moment in African-American history,” and that “It isn’t often we can look to a specific date and say, ‘An evil institution ended that day.
‘”
The 13th Amendment was the final moment that slavery official ended nationwide and you can see why maybe it should be celebrated. So a Whitehouse petition that needs 100,000 signatures is needed to put this to the house.
However, despite being up for more than a day the petition only has 375 signatures at time of writing!
It says
December 6, 1865, is perhaps the most significant date in African-American history, marking the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which legally abolished slavery in the United States. In celebration of the 150th anniversary, this year is an ideal opportunity for our government to formally honor this significant date in history by officially recognizing December 6 as Abolition Day.
So, if you agree you can put your signature to the petition below:
On the flip side many may argue slavery never ended, in today’s climate being black in American could still be said to be a disadvantage.
Will you sign? If not, why not?
