Once is a mistake. Two times is a habit. Connor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather are on a press tour around the world promoting their highly anticipated boxing match on August 26th.
The press conferences consist of both fighters cutting essentially WWE style promos, antics and hijinks to promote the fight and get the world talking. Well, Connor has definitely managed to draw our attention.
During the first press conference with Floyd, he told Floyd “Dance for me boy, dance for me son!” when Floyd started making motions like he was sparring.
The internet was outraged. However, folks started to defend Connor, saying that he caught himself after he said it, then saying “Dance for me son”. OK, it’s a mistake! He’s not from here right? White people internationally are blind to racism right?
So, we decided to gloss over the situation and sit through another press conference on location in Toronto that was basically the same display as the first. Non-stop insults back and forth where they did WWE style monologues for 20 minutes and then traded insults with each other. That’s when, once again, he told Floyd “Dance for me boy!” This time, Floyd actually started dancing.
Floyd Mayweather is one of my favorite athletes but the whole display was cringe-worthy. It was rather obvious that Connor said that on purpose because he knew what the reaction would be, especially the second time around. According to Floyd Mayweather Sr., who always sounds like he’s either punch drunk or actually drunk, Connor’s comments weren’t racial.
At this point in time, I just don’t know. This whole fight is a big mess. And the press conferences are entertaining trainwrecks. All I hope is Floyd Mayweather embarrases dude come August.
