It is not uncommon at all for senators and state representatives to say things that make no sense to most people. However, the State Representative of Oklahoma, George Faught, has made a very peculiar statement in a bid to defend his quite controversial anti-abortion legislation. His anti-abortion stance would make it illegal for women in Oklahoma to get an abortion, even if there were grounded and sound reasons, such as genetic abnormalities, present in the fetus. What he has stated is that “God can bring beauty from ashes.” That is his standpoint on pregnancies that occur from such dire circumstances as incest and rape. Faught does believe that rape and incest are the “Will of God,” going so far as to explain that such horrors occurred in the Bible and as such are divine will.
Faught has been caught numerous times for disregarding such nefarious acts as violence against women- and he uses his religious beliefs in an attempt to back up his points of view. As religion is very respected in Oklahoma, it is only natural for him to attempt to back up his arguments, no matter how strange, insulting, or controversial they may be, by bringing religion up during his discussions. While many people stand firmly in opposition of his viewpoints, this bill may still be passed when it reaches the point where it would be reviewed.
