Street Sweeper Politics: How America the [Potentially] Greatest Became America the Lowest

by | Feb 9, 2017 | Opinion | 0 comments

On January 20, 2017, the “dis”United States of America fell from grace in the eyes of the world and in its own eyes. From the “greatest nation on the planet,” to Number 55 in the Top 50 countries on Earth, and that is not per a statistic that can be followed methodically, it just is what it is.

The following is an excerpt from a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., circa 1967, “The Three Dimensions of A Complete Life”:

What I’m saying to you this morning, my friends, even if it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go on out and sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures; sweep streets like Handel and Beethoven composed music; sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry; (Go ahead) sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, “Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.”

If you can’t be a pine on the top of a hill

Be a scrub in the valley—but be

The best little scrub on the side of the hill,

Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.

If you can’t be a highway just be a trail

If you can’t be the sun be a star;

It isn’t by size that you win or fail—

Be the best of whatever you are.

And when you do this, when you do this, you’ve mastered the length of life. (Yes)

Dr. King Jr. said he wanted to be a “drum major for justice,” and indeed, that’s what he was.

But here we have a nation that believes its “greatness” is in its super-sized dimensions and the size of its bank accounts, rather than its ability to be just and righteous.

However, it isn’t by size and by the size of its bank accounts that America is made great, it is in the way it treats its citizens and cares for those who feed it; and in the way it handles its foreign politics OVERALL.

That all ended in 2017, and this nation may never be able to be IN THE RUNNING for greatness ever again.

Dr. King Jr. said “And there are three dimensions of any complete life to which we can fitly give the words of this text: length, breadth, and height…”

It Isn’t By Size That You Win or You Fail, Be the Best of Whatever You Are

The length of America is that it is the youngest nation on Earth, yet brags and boasts more than civilizations and cultures thousands of years older, and braggadocio does not make it “great.”

The breadth of America was tested in its maltreatment and the subsequent redemption of the slave citizenship upon which it built its historic and histrionic ledger across the transom of the world psyche; yet, breadth was shrunken back down from expansion and progress to small-minded white nationalist institutionalism after a monumental move to break the chains that once held us all captive. For most assuredly, America was not going anywhere on the longest day that it had to stay in one place to keep its slaves from running away.

The height of America was its ability to move on up and ahead in modern technology and advancements and infrastructure. At one time, it was a place that used to take care not to ruin the future for the generations to come, which it no longer does.

To be sure, many countries in the world have surpassed America in their ability to balance length, width and height and stand tall on behalf of its citizens that nurture and feed it at the same time, and without compromising its integrity.

With the onslaught of Donald Trump and the most racist faction of America to have risen to power since Ronald Reagan, comes a nation that is now firmly at the bottom of the barrel in progress and advancements and forward-thinking.

Try as he might, Barack Obama Jr. was not able, due to racism and many other things that involved numerous put-downs by Black people themselves, to “we shall overcome” the need of a controlling faction of America to keep it from becoming great.

The smaller countries and nations aren’t great because they are big in dimensions and have boatloads of money. They are GREAT because they do right by their own people.

The only thing that makes them LESS GREAT is that they are becoming more and more like racists and fascists and misogynists in America, and that ain’t good. At all.

Denmark 🙂
Denmark 🙁

The only question now is, will the American Electoral College live to regret the wrongheaded decision they made by vetting Donald Trump as president, even after he proved -embarrassingly and unceasingly- that he was unfit for this office?

Only time will tell.

End Game.

Hot: Moore’s movie does not leave out the fact that Black people actually live and work and go to school in these more advanced and highly educated and politically sophisticated nations.
Not: Moore’s movie is slanted and does not include the fact that far too many of these happily advancing nations are picking up americanized ways that are going to lead to detrimental unhappiness and the end of lasting peace for them.
