R.I.P.: Colonel Abrams and Sharon Jones

by | Nov 28, 2016 | Opinion | 0 comments

Sometimes we have our pop stars who are well known, best known and remotely or locally known.

We’ve lost some other superstar icons this November 2016 and they should be acknowledged along with the ones who are more well known by the Black community.

I can never forget that Charlie Wilson (formerly of The Gap Band and otherwise known by Snoop Dogg and others as “Uncle Charlie”) made a serious comeback after dropping out of sight for years; however, he was in the same position as Colonel Abrams -homeless and destitute- before a woman in a homeless shelter in LA recognized him and brought him back to his senses and helped him get his life back on track. The rumor is that he later married her.

While ‘Uncle Charlie’ climbed his way back to the top of the old school music charts in recent history and is back on tour and as wildly popular as ever, and we are so happy to see him again .. the luck of the draw would have no such thing happen for Colonel Abrams.

They weren’t “hip hop culture,” but they were succinct pioneers of our Black music culture and history just the same.

Rest in Peace, Sharon Jones and Colonel Abrams.
